Painting Clouds, Trees and Fields with Lucy Thomas

My style for making landscape paintings is loose and slightly impressionistic. I will show you some concrete actions to loosen up your work if you choose to lean into that look with me. I will demonstrate each piece of our painting, then offer individual and group guidance as you make your own pieces. Depending on the pace of the class, you can expect to leave class with more than one small painting either on canvas or paper and one larger piece. 

This is not a class on painting in a realistic style and drawing ability is not necessary. All skill levels are welcome!

PAINT

We will be using acrylic paint. I use Golden Fluid Acrylics almost exclusively but any brand is acceptable. While I am devoted to fluid acrylics, you may also use heavy body acrylics or any viscosity that falls in-between. I do not recommend high flow acrylics. I encourage you to bring what you have and if you can purchase some new paint, get  smalls of the Golden Fluids in the 1 or 4oz. bottles.

Colors you’ll need

1. Pyrole Red or Pyrole Red Light (if you can find it)

2. Ultramarine Blue

3. Raw Umber

4. Yellow Ochre

5. Sap Green Hue

6. Titanium White

7. Azo Gold (not sure if anybody makes this besides Golden)

8. A Primary Yellow - can be Cad yellow or Hanna yellow - just needs to be that primary color

9. Teal

10. Cerulean Blue Deep and/or Primary Cyan

11. Some white Gesso in a tub 

I use Flats and Brights primarily. Please bring some of that style in a half inch up to a two inch width. You can also bring other brushes of different types that you have in your arsenal.

I tend to use rectangular canvases for landscape paintings. I suggest bringing a 10 x 20 and another stretched canvas of your choosing. Also please bring two or three 6x6 or 8x8 stretched canvases. You will also need a large mixed media pad at least 11x14.

MEDIUMS

I never paint anything without using Golden Satin Glazing Liquid. If you already have some fluid medium of some other type or brand you can bring that instead.

OTHER STUFF

You’ll need a spray bottle with water and a roll of paper towels.

I will supply some photos you can use for your subject. You are welcome to bring photos of your own as well.

UPDATED CANCELLATION POLICY: Cancellations made 14 days or more in advance of the workshop will receive a refund equal to 50% of the cost of the class. Cancellations made within 14 days of the event will not receive a refund. This will help ensure that the instructor will be paid for their time and effort of teaching the workshop.
