My favorite painting subjects are bold flowers painted in a loose style. Big strokes and bright, electric colors make me feel good! I would love to show you how make a little happiness by painting these beautiful gifts of nature.

In this two-day workshop you will learn:

1) The basics of the Negative Shape Painting technique

2) Tips on Color and Composition of Still Life and floral paintings

3) Concrete physical actions that can loosen up your style and produce contemporary paintings

4) Learn to see the “big picture” and become less focused on the details

5) My technique for painting water in a vase

6) How many layers of paint will add dimension and validity to your work

Supplies Needed

Paint

I use and prefer Golden Fluid Acrylics over any other brand or viscosity of paint. I encourage you to purchase a least a few of these colors in the fluid paint. I know this can be expensive, so you are also welcome to bring what you have. Forstall carries small bottles that will go a long way and are less expensive. Unless otherwise noted, I will be using this type of paint in the following colors:

  • Diarylide Yellow
  • Primary Yellow of Hansa Yellow opaque or some primary yellow-ish color
  • Ultramarine Blue
  • Yellow Oche
  • Sap Green
  • Quinacridone Magenta
  • Pyrrole Red
  • Titanium White
  • Green Gold
  • Dioxazine Purple
  • Teal
  • Phthalo Green (Blue Shade)

I also like to use a varying assortment of Golden Heavy Body Paint like Diarylide Yellow, Naphthol Pink, Parole Red Light, Permanent Maroon or Alizarin Crimson and any of their fluorescent colors-especially the pink and orange. After all we are painting flowers so let’s use flowery colors! I will leave these choices up to you. I primarily use these toward the end of the painting for added texture. If you already have some heavy body paint, just bring what you have.

A large or extra-large pad of Mixed Media Paper. I try to buy 18x24 size when available

Brushes

Various sizes, including 1 inch and 2 inch of brushes that are Flats and Brights. These are the ones that have straight across bristles.

An extra-large craft style paint brush or a house painting brush for painting backgrounds.

Golden Satin Glazing Liquid and any other mediums you currently use or would like to try.

Various size canvases depending on what you are most comfortable working on. Bring at least one medium-sized (10x10, 12x12, 16x16, etc.) SQUARE canvas.
