Mastering the human figure is often considered the pinnacle of art. However, many artists are afraid or too intimidated to work with the human form. This class is aimed at helping break down the human figure and make it accessible for any artist. The psychology behind many people's fear of working with the figure will also be explored.

Drawing from live models is considered the ideal, however, this class will use photographs of nude models in figurative poses, from 360 degree angles. This method helps give the beginner artist a less intimidating 'gateway' to the human figure, while still providing a strong foundation and understanding of the overall structure of the human form. Basic anatomy will also be covered to give students a greater understanding of how the body functions.

The initial class stages will focus on gesture drawing, emphasizing movement of the body and how the primary forms of the body are incorporated into the movement. From the gesture phase students will work towards a complete and comprehensive figurative piece. Principles of color and value will also be covered for students who wish to translate their work into paint.

Clothing and drapery, along with portrait work, will also be incorporated.

set of graphite drawing pencils (to include HB through 6B)
charcoal pencils / sticks (optional)
sharpener (exacto and sanding stick pad can work as well)
drawing pad (11 x 14 minimum)
kneaded eraser
drawing board (large enough to accommodate drawing pad)
small / medium size graphite sticks (optional)
charcoal pencils/sticks (optional)

Painting (optional)

acrylic paint: 2fl oz tube or larger (titanium white, raw umber, cadmium red medium, cadmium yellow light, ultramarine blue)
water container
assortment of paint brushes in multiple sizes - (round, flat, filbert)
paper towels or rags
assortment of stretch canvases or canvas panels (11 x 14 or larger)

UPDATED CANCELLATION POLICY: Cancellations made 14 days or more in advance of the event will receive a refund equal to 50% of the cost of the event. Cancellations made within 14 days of the event will not receive a refund. This will help ensure that the instructor will be paid for their time and effort of teaching the event.
