Lokta paper has been made for 400 years, and is the same paper used by Buddhist monks in manuscripts and artwork created hundreds of years ago and is still used today. Aitoh's Lokta paper is made in the foothills of the Himalayas. The fiber for this paper is collected annually from a bush that grows wild in Nepal. The bushes are cut down to ground and regrown in the spring. The branches are processed by hand to get the pulp, removing the bark and using the inside of the plant. After creating the pulp, dyes are added to create the color of the paper. To make each sheet the screen is dipped into the pulp and worked on the screen, left to dry until the sheet can be pulled and fully air dried. The sheets are taken to be printed, if needed, screen printed or painted by hand using a water-based permanent ink.
